Location for short film

The film will be set in a block of flats. This way I can build the tension as mother gets closer and closer to where the girl lives. I think the narrow lift and corridors can be used to create a tense feel as we see mother travelling up the block of flats.

I thought this shot would be interesting to use during the film as it creates the idea of a frame within a frame and we can see Mother get closer and closer as she passes through each door way. I also feel the frames could represent, similarly to in Vertigo, a picture which is being portrayed to us and not what is actually real.

Here is a similar shot in the dark. Although it is still very effective, and very sinister, I feel during the light I will have more options as to what mood to create and will be far more effective during the car scene. However, it would be possible to consider that it is dark by the end of the movie and that the day progresses as she gets closer.

I feel that the views from the flat are really effective. They are not only captivating, but they show how far the characters are from the world below, as well as how far apart the girls, and mother are. In this shot specifically, it will be seen when Mother steps out of the lift and we see how high up she is, and are alerted that she is almost there. The light from all sides is effective, as it lights the room well in terms of filming, but also, leaves interesting reflections on the floor.

Here is another shot of the views. We will be introduced to the first girl as she stares out at the view, placing her in the environment and suggesting where Mother is going.
Here is another shot of the landscape, in different weather conditions and lighting. This shows how effective it is at creating a mood and evoking a response.

I think lifts will be effective for the film. Mother standing in the lift will reveal her entire body and her eccentric outfit. The beeping sounds and announcement of the lift as it reaches the floor will build tension, showing how close Mother is.
A slight challenge is the mirrors inside the lift. I may have to shoot from a different angle in order to not show myself and the camera in the mirrors.

I feel the idea of the enclosed space can be used to evoke a feeling of discomfort, and portray Mother as slightly sinister or ambiguous as we are trapped in the lift with her.

I also would like to use the diegetic sound of the buzzer when Mother gets to the door. I think it will be the climax of the tension and could be amplified more loudly for expressionistic effect.

The girls will sit at this table, with the paintings behind carefully thought about and catered to the themes. The minimalistic white wall will allow us to focus on them and their expressions and costume. I also will put many dolls in the background to give hints about the end of the film and suggest her obsession. As the light comes from behind, this set will also be effective in creating an ambiguous silhouette of the doll/girl.

There will be multiple shots of mothers hands in the car, creating a sinister feel as we do not know who is driving. The London sky scrapers are recognisable and work to show mother travelling from the suburbs to the city. We see them through the windscreen as she is on her way, as well as seeing them behind the girl as she stands at her balcony, connecting the two characters in space and suggesting Mother is on her way and coming to see the girl.
