The Fly (short film)

The fly is a comedic short film about an adjacent story to a bank robbery. It depicts a man waiting to drive the robbers away while going mad and being taken over with rage over a fly in his car. The man has enough and destroys the car in an attempt to get the fly to be quiet.

Cinematography-
Establishing shot of him in the car with steering wheel which makes us assume the film is going to be about him being the driver for a bank robber
Close ups build tension and show him in an enclosed space which shows how claustrophobic he is and how trapped he is with the fly
Close ups of the fly make it seem bigger than it is and therefore shows us how much attention he is giving it and how annoying it is to him. The fly also appears gross in this scene.
Mid shot of the door - we are not focused on the big thing that is actually happening
POV shot when he looks in the mirror shows his reaction to seeing himself and the smashed mirror makes us see how much of a mess he has made.
Zoom in and dolly back when he is in the car- shows panic and deliriousness- consumed by rage
As he is getting more and more angry, we see the door again and are closer towards it which suggests tension rising in both situations.
Exterior shots of the car show how calm it is outside of it and how he is supposed to be still which adds to the humour of it. The interior of the car juxtaposes the exterior of the car.
Camera gets more shaky which adds to the sense of franticness.

Editing -
The cuts between him and the door show the two situations going on at once and how maybe we should be focussing on what is going on inside
Fast paced cuts as scene increases which shows how frantic he is and how his anger builds
Cuts from him hitting himself in the face to a shot of the exterior and then the car which shows how much they juxtapose and adds to the sense of comedy.
180 degree shots of him and the bank robber which shows their reaction to him and what has happened and this shows a sense of shock but also as if it has happened before

Mis En Scene-
He is portrayed as as a gangster with his leather jacket, tooth pick, shirt, cuffs and hair
Rabbit foot represents good luck which is ironic as it goes so wrong
He uses the props in the wrong way; donut to entice fly, gun to shoot fly and mask to squash fly
Full coffee cup makes him seem more frantic and dramatic when he spills it down his shirt and it goes everywhere
The masks the other bank robbers wear are comedic because it's not their actual faces but we still get the impression of how they are feeling
Old fashioned car - 70s

Sound-
Sound bridge from the people speaking and guns to the exterior of a city which tells us that it is violent and we guess it may be a bank robbery
Buzzing of the fly shows what he is listening to and is a pinnacle of the movie as that is what we focus on. The sound is quite muffled showing he doesn't know where it is but also that isn't as big a deal as he makes it out to be.
Muffled sound coming from bank and we want to know what is going on in there but keeps going back to him.
Honking sound for ages from car is also annoying and repetitive like the fly
His gun makes different sounds depending on what he shoots - authenticity
Sirens are humorous, we don't expect there to be a police chase and we know they will be caught
Normally, the sirens will be really loud and annoying but in comparison the the repetitive noise of the fly and his mess, it is almost a relief.
